'Aftermath' influenced by the rise of transgressive art from artists such as Andres Serrano and Jenny Saville depicts photographs of a male body lying dead in a crime scene. This work encapsulates the dissection of an individuals lifetime and looks at the tearing and sewing back together of ones inner self through personal experiences of love, hate, grief, sadness and happiness. Ultimately, by the end of your life you are left with a collection of moments and experiences that are you. The use of objects and worldly materials such as a phone are symbolic of 21st century 'Vanitas'
As a child I suffered from severe Eczema causing me to be insecure of my skin, scars and imperfections. Eczema can at times be mild and other times it can be severely aggressive covering every inch of your body. As I matured I learned how to tame my eczema as it was very easily triggered but it never was fully gone. Every time I would feel stress or anxiety it would come back to haunt me. This work is an appreciation of the daily struggles and routines I have to go through because of eczema, the constant insecurities I feel unable to look at people directly in the eyes as well as the constant bodily discomfort.
Fitting in with the current styles and materials I have been using I decided to include shades of red using acrylic paint and a dry brush. During the process I created this piece without the plan of using any colour (seen in the previous images) however I felt that the piece looked very cold which is not what I wanted. The red and the staining in the background elevates and exaggerates the emotion within the hands. I no longer see just hands but a figure trying to escape, trying to live freely. The red is a symbol of passion, love, anger, since moving out of my family home and beginning adulthood I’ve felt all of these things at once. This piece shows growth, rebirth but pain within that, which is also necessary.
